I would highlight the simplicity of [Zero Networks], both in the implementation and in the policy solutions that it generates for you. It's like they say in my department – it's black magic.

Miguel Angel Amigo CISO at Reference Laboratory Genetics

Challenge

Reference Laboratory delivers high-quality clinical analysis services in collaboration with 400+ hospitals and 1,000 clinical analysis laboratories worldwide, providing thousands of tests across specialties like autoimmunity, cardiology, oncology, and more. In this environment, downtime can spell diagnostic delays and critical disruptions in patient care.

While Reference Laboratory had implemented VLANs and Next-Gen Firewalls (NGFWs), the organization struggled with a lack of visibility into VLAN traffic – and in turn, a lack of control. Other solutions Reference Laboratory considered provided visibility, but they didn’t enable seamless enforcement without creating more manual work and added complexity.

Solution

Reference Laboratory turned to Zero Networks for the granular control, comprehensive visibility, and operational simplicity they needed. Zero’s effortless discovery and learning – powered by deterministic, human-on-the-loop automation – uncovered previously unknown service accounts and generated fine-grained access policies to constrain them.

As a Palo Alto Networks customer, Reference Laboratory also unlocked the combined power and simplicity of Zero Networks’ and Palo Alto Networks’ partnership, automating traditionally complex processes to deliver dynamic defenses.

"We will see a great solution between Zero Networks and Palo Alto, because the policies that the Palo Alto Firewall has are static; by leveraging the intelligence of the tags that Zero Networks has created, or the IPs it has detected on the same network, we can have dynamic policies within the Palo Alto Firewall itself."

Result

With Zero Networks, Reference Laboratory implemented microsegmentation without users noticing at all. Zero's automated solution effortlessly secured service accounts, dynamically protected privileged ports with just-in-time MFA, and cut down on solution sprawl by delivering a unified platform for identity, microsegmentation, and visibility.

And thanks to Zero’s deterministic automation engine, Reference Laboratory ensures that critical operations stay secure, even as network changes occur.

“We receive alerts from Zero Networks about things it has detected, and that improves the policies – it modifies the policy so [changes] can be applied.”
